Cox, Cookies & Cakes vs. Hummingbird - A Tale of Two Cupcakes

The corner of Brewer Street and Wardour Street in Soho is a great place to be standing, as both streets have a fabulous cupcake shop. The question is which street to take? One afternoon, The Boyfriend and I decided to taste test. One Vanilla Cupcake (Cox,Cookies and Cake) and one Toffee Apple Cupcake (Hummingbird). Sitting on a step on a random street in Soho we compiled the following list of merits:

Cox, Cookies and Cake - Vanilla Cupcake with Vanilla Frosting:
+1: Originality in flavours and decorations - just look at the skulls and the lips.
+1: Cheaper just 2.50
+1: charming staff
- 1: Tape on bottom of box thus meaning opening the box leads to a mushing of the cupcake
+ 1: Use of sprinkles
+1: Tasting like Costco birthday cake
-1: Top heavy with too much icing
+1: so good the boyfriend decided to lick it off
+1: Cool and quirky shop design
Total Score: 5 points

Hummingbird:
+1: Efficiency, the line moved quickly
+1: More than just cupcakes, whoppie cakes, frosted brownies and cookies all looked great
+1: Constantly changing flavours and specials
+1: Cuter packaging that doesn't lead to mushed cupcakes
-1: No incorporation of the toffee apple flavour into the actually cake
-1: Crusting of frosting
-1: More fairy like portions than cupcake

Total Score: 1 point

Clear winner - Cox, Cookies and Cake. That's not to say Hummingbird isn't good, it's great, and has been the source of all my birthday cakes for the past three years but in this mini competition,  CCC won hands down.
